Three generations of rhythm, carried into a new one.

Enayet Hossain’s grandfather, the late Ustad Kader Buksh, was renowned as one of India’s foremost musicologists. His father, Ustad Hamid Hossain, brought that lineage to the United States. Enayet represents a new generation of tabla trained outside India — and has spent it building a catalog of his own.

Heritage

His grandfather, the late Ustad Kader Buksh, was renowned as one of India’s foremost musicologists and musicians. Enayet learned the tabla from his father, Ustad Hamid Hossain, a respected music teacher and performer in the United States, and represents a new generation of musicians trained outside of India.

Growing up in the United States while accompanying some of India’s top musicians — Ustad Vilayat Khan, Ustad Salamat Ali Khan, Pandit Jasraj, Shujaat Khan, and Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan — he built a rare blend of traditional artistry and modern global exposure.

Range

A versatile tabla performer, Enayet is equally adept at accompanying North Indian classical music and instrumental music, and light classical genres such as thumri, ghazal, and dadra, while also delivering captivating solo performances.

With over 50 compact disc recordings to his name, he has showcased his artistry to audiences worldwide, been recognized with citations from the state of Maryland along with a grant for artist residency, and featured in numerous newspapers as a leading tabla artist.

Innovation

In addition to his musical expertise, Enayet studied Computer Science in college, blending technology with his artistry to create groundbreaking products in Indian music. His CD-ROM, Tabla Volume 1: A Journey Into Eastern Percussion, was critically acclaimed and widely used in musicology programs worldwide.

Together with his close associate Anjan Chattopadhyay, he co-created Sangeetpedia, a multimedia encyclopedia of Indian music — launched in 2009 as an interactive DVD-ROM with 1,500 terms, 700+ videos, and 450+ audio files, followed by a mobile app in 2011. With the DVD-ROM now discontinued, Sangeetpedia is being rebuilt as a website. More recently, he founded the streaming platform Mela Music, which presents ragas based on the listener’s location — the right raga for the right prahar, or time of day — aligning ancient practice with modern technology.

Fusion & Recognition

In 2013, Enayet formed the Indian-Jazz Fusion group Melodic Intersect, collaborating with rising Indian classical and fusion artists from around the world. Their albums have been submitted for Grammy consideration across seven award years (see below), earned a nomination for Best World Music Album at the 14th Annual Independent Music Awards, and have consistently charted in the top 10 on the CMJ charts in the United States.

Enayet is also one of the few Indian musicians to be an active voting member of the Recording Academy, playing an integral role in the Grammy Awards. His record label, Aimrec, and his full catalog of releases are explored further in his discography.
